2015 Extraordinary Women of Color Honor

Susan Casper Sonoran Living ABC15 Arizona honored me today as an Extraordinary Woman of Color. Thank you Susan. I appreciate the recognition and your vision for this Black History Month Celebration.

Extraordinary Women of ColorLeading up to today, I thought about the friends that would be in the audience and those that wanted to be there but were not able to and was reminded of the African expression, “I am because we are.” And I add to that “I do because we are called.”  I am extraordinary because of the family I come from for as far back and even farther than I can remember. I am because of the family I go to today with faith and pride in them for never giving up. They inspire me. It is because of the companies that said, ” Yes come do your work and training here (wherever in the world “here” is). We believe in our people and we want them to have an experience of what their lives might be on the other side of change.” It is because of the people who believe that by working together we can make something magical, memorable, life-defining and yes, extraordinary occur.

I welcome those who see this video and say, “If you have a vision or big dream, let’s be extraordinary and create something positively powerful together. We can because we are – choosing to be extraordinary.”

ABHOW’s Kay Kallander to receive highest LeadingAge Honor

Larry Minnix, president of LeadingAge, has announced that Kay Kallander, ABHOW Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning will receive the Award of Honor at the 2014 LeadingAge Annual Conference. This is the highest award given in the field of aging services.

[Tweet “ABHOW is one of the nation’s most trusted providers of senior housing and health care since 1949”]This could not have happened to a more worthy person. Kay has dedicated herself to seniors, especially in dementia care and leadership development. She has touched many lives personally and professionally in her many roles at ABHOW.

This is also an historic moment for ABHOW as ABHOW is the first organization to have three Award of Honor recipients. The first was Dr. Richard Ice, Mr. David Ferguson, and now Ms. Kay Kallander.

For the last 20 years her work has focused on seniors. First as a Director of Nursing and then as Executive Director of Plymouth Village, a continuing care retirement community in Redlands, California and then as a member of the leadership team of ABHOW. Her research led ABHOW to develop The Grove, where private rooms surround a comfortable living room and kitchen, and where the staff relies chiefly on an interactive, social approach to resident care.

She served five years as the Chief of Operations and now is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning. Kay Kallander was selected to represent the United States at the first International Alzheimer’s and E-Rotary conference in Sydney, Australia. She also recently served as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in Washington, D.C. She is currently serving on the Aging Services of California Board of Directors, the AAHSA House of Delegates and she is with the Leadership AAHSA program as a coach.

ABHOW is one of the nation’s most trusted providers of senior housing and health care since 1949. They are setting the bar on innovative memory care. LeadingAge is an association of 6,000 not-for-profit organizations dedicated to making America a better place to grow old.

Kay Kallander is also a previous recipient of the Positively Powerful Woman Award for Global Leadership.
