Debbie Castaldo, 2018 Positively Powerful Woman of Corporate Leadership: Debbie Castaldo is Vice President of Corporate and Community Impact for the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Executive Director of the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation. She enters her tenth season with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018, overseeing the organization’s award-winning community efforts. Debbie Castaldo leads the team’s industry-leading fundraising efforts that have made charitable contributions exceeding $55 million to non-profit organizations throughout Arizona since 1997. The D-backs and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation projects and programs are improving our communities and creating opportunities for our most at-risk children and families.

Dr. Pamela Williamson, 2018 Positively Powerful Woman of Visionary Leadership: Dr. Pamela Williamson is President and CEO of WBEC-West, one of the largest third-party certifiers of businesses owned, controlled, and operated by women in the United States. Under her leadership, the WBEC-West team has generated over 100,000 connections between certified WBEs and Corporations across the nation looking to procure products and services from Women Business Owners. Dr. Williamson has over 25-years of experience in financial and consulting services, specializing in change and organizational management. She has served as the CEO of a SABA 7 consulting firm and as the Vice President and Deputy Director of a National Behavioral Health Care Organization’s Psychiatric urgent care facility.

Angela Hughey, 2018 Positively Powerful Woman of Equality LeadershipAngela Hughey is Co-Founder and President of ONE Community — a member-based coalition of businesses and organizations that support diversity, inclusion, and equality for all Arizonans. In 2013, Angela Hughey and the ONE Community team launched The UNITY Pledge, a concerted effort by Arizona businesses and individuals to advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and hospitality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals and their allies. The UNITY Pledge is the largest equality pledge in the nation.

Hong Yee Mei, 2018 Positively Powerful Woman of Education Leadership: Country Manager and Co-founder of Milestone Trainings in Malaysia. Yee Mei has had 20 years of experience in the transformational training industry. In the last 6 years, she has been instrumental in building Milestone Trainings from an idea to an organization that has seen 1368 new students in the transformational training program in 2017. This work which bears the hallmark of her role and contribution has changed the lives of the graduates and cascaded into their families, workplace, and communities. Values keep us healthy — emotionally, spiritually, and physically. They are the ones that we must unquestionably keep, and the ones that must direct our actions. Our values are our strengths. As a consultant, executive coach and facilitator, I’ve been called me ‘The Transformation Generator’ for a reason.  My unwavering promise is that I make sure the people I work for achieve their ULTIMATE goals in life and business. So, I had an emotional response when I read that Essence magazine, a client of my ad agency years ago, is Black owned once again. The values Essence personified were acknowledgment, respect and commitment. They were committed to bringing equity and equality as “a marquee lifestyle brand for African American women.”

Congratulations to “@Essence Ventures LLC, a company launched in 2017 by Shea Moisture founder Richelieu Dennis. As a result, the Essence brand has returned to a 100% black-owned independent company, after 12 years of being owned by Time.….As part of the new deal, Essence President Michelle Ebanks will continue in her role and join its board of directors. Success for Women in business is good for everyone

The success of women in leadership roles.

The payout for firms that embrace success for females in leadership roles could be lucrative, as studies have shown that companies with 30% women executives average better returns. That in itself should be enough to sway corporations on the fence about installing female advancement programs and incentives into their organizations. Whether it will remains to be seen….Further advancement will likely require a cultural and psychological shift within the minds of employees of all levels and, perhaps, in all of our minds.

While there has been some success for women in the corporate arena, the fact is that gender inequality stems from a slew of assumptions, prejudices and learned behaviors that take time to be undone.   “People tune women out and why do they do that?” posits Betty Spence president, National Association for Female Executives “That’s a cultural thing and it’s probably a universal thing.” If true, such a tendency would mean a swath of input and human capital is going unrecognized.

Arizona State University is a public institution that has a total undergrad enrollment of 41,828, exists in the urban setting of Tempe, Arizona on a campus of 661 acres. U.S. News & World Report named ASU the #1 university for innovation in the country, ahead of both MIT and Stanford. Arizona State University is ranked #507 in ethnic diversity nationwide with a student body composition that is above the national average. (Source). Lisa Loo is its Vice President of Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel. On June 10, she will receive the Social Justice Award at the Positively Powerful Woman Awards.

Given the size, diversity, business interests and complexity of Arizona State University, the legal responsibilities that Lisa Loo must manage as Vice President of Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel would be daunting if she had not already faced significant trials and tribulations in her journey to the corporate offices of this great American university.

Public institutions of higher education manifest legal and operational characteristics that make them different from private institutions….Given the size and complexity of the typical college and the litigious environment in which they operate, virtually every college in the United States regularly uses the services of a lawyer.  (Source).

Persisting despite adversity, Lisa immigrated to the United States with her family as a young child where they lived in New York City. She faced the educational trauma of being told not to speak Chinese in school and overcame this to advance from the remedial to the advanced level in grade school. When her father died, she helped her widowed mother raise her fellow siblings. After putting herself through college, she attended law school and became a leader in a profession where women and people of color are woefully underrepresented. On the way, she acquired a NYC journalism background which was to shape her commitment to social justice and commitment to social causes.

She served as Vice President of Victory Together, the coalition that primarily and successfully advocated for the Arizona statewide MLK Jr./Civil Rights Day.  She also served on the board of Harmony, Inc., a coalition of business, civic, and political leaders working to remove barriers to advancement in businesses and governmental institutions, and on the State Advisory Council to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.  She has also served on numerous advisory councils to various Arizona governors and attorney generals and on numerous governmental and law-related committees. She has been recognized by the State Bar of Arizona for advancing equal opportunity in the legal profession and also as the 1993 Outstanding Young Lawyer. In 2016, Lisa was elected the President of the Bar Association that regulates Arizona’s more than 24,000 attorneys.  She is a founding board member of the Arizona Asian American Bar Association and a founding planning member of the Arizona Minority Bar Conference. 

Lisa Loo is a mentor to others and a support to the students of Arizona State University. She is a proud mother and has received her black belt in tae kwon do. 

Lessons from Lisa Loo:

  • What is social justice?  Everyone has a right to justice. Everyone should have the right to full opportunity. A person can make an impact when they are part of the conversation when laws and policies were made.
  • Things aren’t challenges, things are what you have in front of you.
  • Coming to America meant hope and opportunity. Some opportunities are easy to accomplish, some are harder. When you have an opportunity, say “yes” and the decide what to do with that choice.
  • You must be disciplined and that takes energy
