The power of purpose is to live a meaningful existence.

The power of purpose is to live a meaningful existence.

The power of purpose is to live a meaningful existence.

Purpose answers the questions: Why do I exist? What is my calling? How am I called to serve? Discovering one’s purpose and living it can be one of the biggest breakthroughs of life. The pandemic, racial injustice, and #BlackLivesMatter have made my commitment to living my purpose more of a priority than ever before. My purpose is to change lives and businesses for the better.

Regardless if this is the 1,000,000th time or the first time, take this opportunity, during this time, to ask yourself again: What brings you joy in the giving? What interests have you consistently been about since you were a child and why? When you think about the legacy you would like to leave, what comes to mind? What is the highest and best use of you, your time, your attention, and your intention?

Regardless of what it is that you do, like a job, like “the who, what, and where of it,”… the “why” of it will have you touching on your purpose. You are ‘here,’ being who you are for some reason. Some legacy, some unique heartfelt mission, that you are following. There is something now, midst this chaos, that is so important to you that you feel compelled to take action. That is “Your Purpose”.

Hold it tight. You will be better for it and you will live longer because of it. “Lifelong health is not about defying death – for we all must die at some point – rather it is a means of fulfilling the purpose of life itself. Lifelong health means living the journey fully and completely until it is over.” Source: Sound Mind, Sound Body: A New Model For Lifelong Health by Dr. Kenneth R. Pelletier, Professor of Medicine, Stanford University Center for Research.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live… I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is not a brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”  George Bernard Shaw

The Marketing and Business Webinar How To’s

The Marketing and Business Webinar How To’s

Phillip Kotter says marketing is…”the science and art of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy the needs of a target market at a profit.  Marketing identifies unfulfilled needs and desires.”

Here are a few of the many take ways that resulted from my first Post-Summit Positively Powerful Webinar. My two special guests who will bring us their ideas perspectives, to life are Positively Powerful businesswomen and leaders, Jackie Wszalek and Dr. Pamela Williamson.
Have a network of support. Whether you have a business challenge or an idea you want to create, have a network of support, people who you trust to “have your back”. How do you create one? This comes from your being giving and accepting support. Many of us want to be a lone wolf, to go it alone, to think we know it all, this is a strategy that in a time of a business crisis will not work. Here are a few ideas around network building that were mentioned:
  • Be authentic.
  • Make a habit of doing virtual introductions to people you think have similar business interests and who might find it beneficial to know each other.
  • Share and give resources and information that others can benefit from.
Be consistent. Create your marketing program in such a way that the graphic elements, the words you use, and your social media, website work have a “family” look.
Know your target audience. If your target customer is business to consumer (B2C) or business to business (B2B), the look of your website and the tone of your copy will be different. Another example was in the use of printed materials. Your message may work better on a promotional item for one person and on a brochure for another.
Be a problem solver. The transformational tip I chose to share for my first webinar came from reading “How to introduce yourself so you’ll be unforgettable (in a good way!)” Each one of us is unique, talented and brilliant in our own way. The key point of this is to state your uniqueness in your introduction rather than just your name, company, and title. It works like this: “What problems do you solve at work? And what makes you especially effective at doing so? Framing yourself as a problem-solver may trigger an instant reaction when you meet someone new” says Joanna Bloor, CEO of Amplify Labs. The guest speakers and I all did this and it worked marvelously. (Ted Talk, How to introduce yourself so you’ll be unforgettable in a good way.)

A Positively Powerful Woman’s Delightful Evening: PPWA Year 11

A delightful evening, the décor, the ambiance of the evening at DBG was the perfect backdrop to an evening of elegant celebration, inspiration, and fun. All the ingredients of a meticulously orchestrated event flowed seamlessly, generating an atmosphere of warmth, friendliness, inclusiveness, and belonging. It appeared that every detail was considered to achieve and accommodate that atmosphere, worked perfectly The fusion of orange and fuschia color theme – representative of desert sunset tones – radiantly complimented the DBG.setting was a brilliant stroke of inspiration.

On entering the venue, one was greeted by the sound of Ricky Richardson’s lovely music, just before seeing the drinks tables draped with tablecloths of fuschia and orange elegantly knotted to keep them from being lifted off the tables by the gentle wind, which got underneath and fanned them out beautifully. It seemed to me that this very first impression created by this beautiful, peaceful and welcoming scene set a quiet, yet definitively peaceful, embracing tone for the evening ahead. As people began to arrive, there was ease of access to avail themselves a cool refreshing drink at either of the two drink stations, able to mingle before the event began. There was an atmosphere of camaraderie in the courtyard as participants registered, met each other as returning participants recognized and greeted each and new ones introduced themselves to each other, already setting the scene for a mutually light hearted feeling to the evening. At the appropriate time, guests were invited to enter Dorrance Hall to witness the glamorous decorative tradition of the Powerfully Powerful Women’s Award celebration. The look provided a bright and dramatic welcome to a fun-filled, friendly and “welcoming” evening. The décor was quietly, welcoming and elegantly stunning.

Keynote In her keynote address, Dr. Joel Martin drew the audience into the spirit of inclusivity through first introducing us to her late mother with and a black and white photo showing an elegantly and stylishly dressed woman, and then describing the diversity within her family which she described as a “little UN”. Through her diverse family, she learned about loving differences, about inclusiveness – which is really family, friends, folk, and community. In short, fostering environments where individuals are encouraged to feel they are valued and belong. Certainly, the atmosphere of the event was one of belonging and acceptance. Dr. Joel introduced a symbol beside the picture of her mother, open hands on which there is a heart – symbolic of her encouragement for us all to “Pay it forward with intentionality, with intensity, and fierce collaboration with open hearts”. She also shared how at a young age the humming of planes flying over captured her imagination and she developed her love for planes, intuiting that there is something about flight that is a humbling experience. She encouraged guests to “fly without wings, dream with open eyes and see in darkness” as that is much needed today because when “fears are grounded, dreams take flight”. Then dinner began, photos were taken and there was laughter and friendship among the guests. After Joel’s personal recognition of each Positively Powerful Woman Awards recipient, the presenters awarded each woman her trophy. The honorees’ authenticity and purpose struck a chord with us all. As I left Dorrance hall, reuniting myself with my comfortable shoes and walking to my car. Visitors were still milling around, enjoying the balmy breeze which fanned through the leaves of the trees. As I walked out, it came to me that even if I wasn’t feeling particularly happy when I went in (I was hot and hurried), the spirit of happiness was definitely in me when I came out. This feeling was endorsed by the quiet, perfect lift of the light cool leaf rustling breeze moving among the trees of the Desert Botanical Garden. I heard what seemed to me, the sigh of Spirit well pleased. A perfectly orchestrated and decorated event, contributing uplifting energy into the ether of the Universe – a mission of love and belonging accomplished and complete.

Hong Yee Mei, 2018 PPW Award Recipient

Positively powerful people are visionary leaders.  They make their vision into reality without any evidence, permission, or authority from others that it will occur. Yee Mei is one of these leaders. She is a Positively Powerful Woman Award recipient of 2018 and this is how she brought her vision for an Asian woman’s empowerment training to life, and why.

The flame she never gave up.

Yee Mei says “I watched my Mother and learned from her. I wanted all women to know that life is more than just duty and obligation. Women want to do better, they just don’t know how. 10 years ago I wanted to have a women’s training but there was no one who could do this until Dr. Joel Martin came to work with Milestone. She’s a transformational trainer who focuses on women’s leadership and empowerment.”

Yee Mei watched her Mom die from cancer never having taken the trips that she wanted to take. Even when Yee Mei said she would take care of everything, her Mom said, “No, I will wait for your father.” Her Mother put family first as a dutiful wife and mother. Yee Mei continues, “When Mom passed away in 2004 I was shocked. It spread so quickly. I spent Mom’s final days with her in the hospital.”

This experience, as well as others having to do with women’s beliefs, became a flame within Yee Mei for a women’s empowerment training.  Yee Mei is a single Mum who refused to let stereotypes stop her from having her baby, Caleigh. Most ordinary people, women especially, give up on their dreams and don’t think that they even deserve one because of the prevailing beliefs about women, marriage, family, values.

Don’t give up your dream!

Unlike too many who give up too soon, Yee Mei Hong never thought her dream for Women’s Empowerment was impossible. 10 years after she imagined it, talked it over with Milestone CEO Douglas Chee, she declared it. Then on 2016 October 28, 29 and 30th, 110 women joined Yee Mei and Dr. Joel Martin in the manifestation of both of their dreams and declarations. With Yee Mei Hong’s successful pioneering of the Women’s Empowerment Workshop in Malaysia, they have created “her-story”. She has produced two Women’s Empowerment Events for Asia.

Meet Hong Ye Mei, May 17, 2018.

Manager and Co-founder of Milestone Trainings in Malaysia, Yee Mei has had 20 years of experience in the transformational training industry. In the last 6 years, she has been instrumental in building Milestone Trainings from an idea to an organization that has seen 1368 new students in the transformational training program in 2017. This work which bears the hallmark of her role and contribution has changed the lives of the graduates and cascaded into their families, workplace, and communities.

“Values are the morals that we live by. They reside deep within us, and they affect our emotions. They are tough to alter, and often reside in our unconsciousness” (Source: How To Be A Positively Powerful Person! The Spirit-Filled Edition. Dr. Joel Martin).

Values keep us healthy — emotionally, spiritually, and physically. They are the ones that we must unquestionably keep, and the ones that must direct our actions. Our values are our strengths. As a consultant, executive coach and facilitator, I’ve been called me ‘The Transformation Generator’ for a reason.  My unwavering promise is that I make sure the people I work for achieve their ULTIMATE goals in life and business. I value what they value and their missions as my own. The value that keeps me motivated is commitment.

Dr. Joel P. Martin, now President of Positively Powerful / Triad West, Inc. and daughter, Cybel Martin, now ICG Local 600 Director of Photography.

So, I had an emotional response when I read that Essence magazine, a client of my ad agency years ago, is Black owned once again. The values Essence personified were acknowledgment, respect and commitment. They were committed to bringing equity and equality as “a marquee lifestyle brand for African American women.”

Congratulations to “@Essence Ventures LLC, a company launched in 2017 by Shea Moisture founder Richelieu Dennis. As a result, the Essence brand has returned to a 100% black-owned independent company, after 12 years of being owned by Time.….As part of the new deal, Essence President Michelle Ebanks will continue in her role and join its board of directors. In addition, Michelle Ebanks, along with a Black female-led executive team, will have an equity stake in the business….Said Ebanks in a statement. “In addition, it represents a critical recognition, centering and elevation of the Black women running the business from solely a leadership position to a co-ownership position.” Derek Dingle adds, “The “groundbreaking” transaction “demonstrates that a number of African American entrepreneurs can execute with vision and wherewithal to return valuable institutions to African American ownership – a rare event in contemporary Black business history.” @blackenterprise @Essence Read more here.
