Arizona is seeing a growth in women entrepreneurs… The number of women-owned firms in the state has climbed by 15.9 percent in the past five years, and revenue from these businesses has grown by 10.5 percent. As of the beginning of 2019, more than 220,000 firms in Arizona are owned by women.

Geri Stengel, Research Adviser for American Express

Travel, life experiences and passion for being socially conscious, have brought Stephanie Vasquez, owner of Fair Trade Café, to this exact moment in her life. She is one of the women entrepreneurs who is growing her business in Arizona.

Stephanie Vasquez is an Arizonan native who graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in education and began her professional career as a middle school science teacher, Stephanie was always inclined and passionate about helping her community.

In 2006, after a life-changing trip to Costa Rica, Stephanie experienced an “a-ha” moment. Moved by the culture, love, and respect that Costa Ricans displayed for their coffee fields and land, she returned to Arizona knowing she would one day own her own socially-conscious coffee shop. Stephanie had the concept and vision in mind, now her focus was on making it a reality.

It wasn’t until 2007, in a moment Stephanie calls destiny, she was presented with the opportunity to take over the operations of Fair Trade Café. Since then, Fair Trade Café has become a staple of Roosevelt Row and a gathering place for ASU students, local organizations, business leaders and politicians.

Fair Trade Cafe, Phoenix, AZ

She has been recognized as Stylos 2010 Entrepreneur of the Year, 2014 Cox Latina Entrepreneur of the Year, 40 Hispanic Leaders Under 40, and most recently a recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award by Phoenix Business Journal. Aside from Ms. Vasquez’s professional accolades, she is deeply rooted in her community and is the first to do what she can to help advance causes near and dear to her. From being a Hispanic Leadership Institute alumna to a board member of AGUILA Youth Leadership Institute, serving in multiple advisory boards and volunteering for Justice that Works where she assists in transitioning recently incarcerated women into the workforce and community. Stephanie is engaged in making her community a better place to live, which is one of the reasons she created #WomenofPhoenix, a group of women in the Phoenix area whose endeavor is to empower other women in their life’s journey

Her belief that embracing socially conscious business practices creates a fruitful outcome for all and has guided her professionally and personally. As a mother of three, she is working not only to continue her success through her love of coffee but also to make the world a brighter place for her children and her community.

This is an open invitation to all who know about Fair Trade Cafe and those who would like to acknowledge Stephanie Vasquez for her success. Join us. “Values are the morals that we live by. They reside deep within us, and they affect our emotions. They are tough to alter, and often reside in our unconsciousness” (Source: How To Be A Positively Powerful Person! The Spirit-Filled Edition. Dr. Joel Martin).

Values keep us healthy — emotionally, spiritually, and physically. They are the ones that we must unquestionably keep, and the ones that must direct our actions. Our values are our strengths. As a consultant, executive coach and facilitator, I’ve been called me ‘The Transformation Generator’ for a reason.  My unwavering promise is that I make sure the people I work for achieve their ULTIMATE goals in life and business. I value what they value and their missions as my own. The value that keeps me motivated is commitment.

Dr. Joel P. Martin, now President of Positively Powerful / Triad West, Inc. and daughter, Cybel Martin, now ICG Local 600 Director of Photography.

So, I had an emotional response when I read that Essence magazine, a client of my ad agency years ago, is Black owned once again. The values Essence personified were acknowledgment, respect and commitment. They were committed to bringing equity and equality as “a marquee lifestyle brand for African American women.”

Congratulations to “@Essence Ventures LLC, a company launched in 2017 by Shea Moisture founder Richelieu Dennis. As a result, the Essence brand has returned to a 100% black-owned independent company, after 12 years of being owned by Time.….As part of the new deal, Essence President Michelle Ebanks will continue in her role and join its board of directors. In addition, Michelle Ebanks, along with a Black female-led executive team, will have an equity stake in the business….Said Ebanks in a statement. “In addition, it represents a critical recognition, centering and elevation of the Black women running the business from solely a leadership position to a co-ownership position.” Derek Dingle adds, “The “groundbreaking” transaction “demonstrates that a number of African American entrepreneurs can execute with vision and wherewithal to return valuable institutions to African American ownership – a rare event in contemporary Black business history.” @blackenterprise @Essence Read more here.

Ten Great Reasons to attend the June 9 Global Women’s World Cafe in Phoenix!

Ten Great Reasons to attend the June 9 Global Women’s World Cafe in Phoenix!

Here are the Top Ten Reasons to attend the Global Women’s World Cafe Saturday, June 9 of Positively Powerful Woman Awards 10th Annual Celebration Weekend. (These ten reason are in no particular order and are probably not the complete list.)

  1. You have a burning wish to talk with other women who care about the challenges women face and the solutions. You want to get the resources and information to deal with them. You want your voice be heard!
  2. The World Cafe Process is a new, fresh way of having a large group discussion and you want to get involved and see what it is like.
  3. The timeline is flexible and the seating arrangements will change so you will be in action rather than suffering “death by power point”.
  4. You are a giver, a leader and an aspirational person. You want to make a difference.
  5. This is a collaboration between Triad West and the ASU Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. If you attended their Girls Night Out with Soledad O’Brien, you remember Dr. Joel Martin’s FEARLESS emc’ing.
  6. It is being co-sponsored by Fresh Start in Phoenix, and you know that Fresh Start offers important services for the advancement of women.
  7. You know that with Positively Powerful events, “expect the unexpected surprise” is to be expected. The 10th Positively Powerful Woman Awards Annual Gala Celebration is the next night and it too will be empowering, uplifting, upbeat, inspirational and informative.
  8. You want to support Fatimah Halims STEAM & Global Citizenship Trip for young women, Ghana, July 3-18, 2017, and are looking forward to this opportunity to purchase artifacts, jewelry and more for a good cause.
  9. It is a good investment of time, talent and treasure at $45.
  10. The closing general session will be a masterful facilitation leading to a document that you, as an attendee, will be proud to have contributed to.

Who will be this year’s Positively Powerful Women? One may be your nominee.

2014 PPW Group PhotoAs you think back on our her-story, what women have been “A Positively Powerful Woman”? If there were a special award for this, with social media available to share her story, her organization, the nonprofits she supports and the commitments that motivate her; plus a gala recognizing her leadership as part of a transformational program, who would you nominate? We want to know. Answer the questions below. And thank you!

One easy quick action…

Our Positively Powerful Woman Awards shine a light on women who are making a difference and the causes that matter to them. Attendance at the Awards program is open to the general public – women, men and families. For 8 years, this program has provided inspiration, motivation, empowerment and connections to build businesses and professional careers and skills to be a transformational leader anywhere in the world. We shine a light on our honorees in PR, print, websites and social media to empower all people to live their dreams. And we’ve won an award as one the Best Events for Women from Stevie International.

We all make a difference. The question is what kind of difference do we chose to make?

Please answer the three questions below in our comments section. We want to know what you think and who inspires you by her example. And again, thank you.

  1. What makes a woman positively powerful?
  2. Who do you nominate to be an honoree at the 2016 Positively Powerful Woman Awards?
  3. What about them fits this definition for you?

Message from Joel Martin, PhD, Triad West Inc. & Founder:

The experience I want people to leave with at the end of every Positively Powerful Woman Program is that because they attended, their lives will never be the same but better, that they are closer to living their dreams than ever before, and they could as easily be on the stage as any of our recipients with the tools, access and resources that my team and I provide. Our intention is to “fire them up” so that they take action on the vision they have for what matters to them. That’s also my intention in every presentation I produce, speech I give or training I deliver.2016 FB PPWA Photo
