A Positively Powerful Woman’s Delightful Evening: PPWA Year 11

A delightful evening, the décor, the ambiance of the evening at DBG was the perfect backdrop to an evening of elegant celebration, inspiration, and fun. All the ingredients of a meticulously orchestrated event flowed seamlessly, generating an atmosphere of warmth, friendliness, inclusiveness, and belonging. It appeared that every detail was considered to achieve and accommodate that atmosphere, worked perfectly The fusion of orange and fuschia color theme – representative of desert sunset tones – radiantly complimented the DBG.setting was a brilliant stroke of inspiration.

On entering the venue, one was greeted by the sound of Ricky Richardson’s lovely music, just before seeing the drinks tables draped with tablecloths of fuschia and orange elegantly knotted to keep them from being lifted off the tables by the gentle wind, which got underneath and fanned them out beautifully. It seemed to me that this very first impression created by this beautiful, peaceful and welcoming scene set a quiet, yet definitively peaceful, embracing tone for the evening ahead. As people began to arrive, there was ease of access to avail themselves a cool refreshing drink at either of the two drink stations, able to mingle before the event began. There was an atmosphere of camaraderie in the courtyard as participants registered, met each other as returning participants recognized and greeted each and new ones introduced themselves to each other, already setting the scene for a mutually light hearted feeling to the evening. At the appropriate time, guests were invited to enter Dorrance Hall to witness the glamorous decorative tradition of the Powerfully Powerful Women’s Award celebration. The look provided a bright and dramatic welcome to a fun-filled, friendly and “welcoming” evening. The décor was quietly, welcoming and elegantly stunning.

Keynote In her keynote address, Dr. Joel Martin drew the audience into the spirit of inclusivity through first introducing us to her late mother with and a black and white photo showing an elegantly and stylishly dressed woman, and then describing the diversity within her family which she described as a “little UN”. Through her diverse family, she learned about loving differences, about inclusiveness – which is really family, friends, folk, and community. In short, fostering environments where individuals are encouraged to feel they are valued and belong. Certainly, the atmosphere of the event was one of belonging and acceptance. Dr. Joel introduced a symbol beside the picture of her mother, open hands on which there is a heart – symbolic of her encouragement for us all to “Pay it forward with intentionality, with intensity, and fierce collaboration with open hearts”. She also shared how at a young age the humming of planes flying over captured her imagination and she developed her love for planes, intuiting that there is something about flight that is a humbling experience. She encouraged guests to “fly without wings, dream with open eyes and see in darkness” as that is much needed today because when “fears are grounded, dreams take flight”. Then dinner began, photos were taken and there was laughter and friendship among the guests. After Joel’s personal recognition of each Positively Powerful Woman Awards recipient, the presenters awarded each woman her trophy. The honorees’ authenticity and purpose struck a chord with us all. As I left Dorrance hall, reuniting myself with my comfortable shoes and walking to my car. Visitors were still milling around, enjoying the balmy breeze which fanned through the leaves of the trees. As I walked out, it came to me that even if I wasn’t feeling particularly happy when I went in (I was hot and hurried), the spirit of happiness was definitely in me when I came out. This feeling was endorsed by the quiet, perfect lift of the light cool leaf rustling breeze moving among the trees of the Desert Botanical Garden. I heard what seemed to me, the sigh of Spirit well pleased. A perfectly orchestrated and decorated event, contributing uplifting energy into the ether of the Universe – a mission of love and belonging accomplished and complete.

Top 10+ reasons for Desert Botanical Garden membership.

Top 10+ reasons for Desert Botanical Garden membership.

Every year we honor a nonprofit organization at the Positively Powerful Woman Awards. This year, we are happy to support the Desert Botanical Garden’s membership drive. Having this year’s awards at this culturally-aware location, letting our guests see and experience the Garden’s beauty, and providing a PPW membership gift is a win-win-win. We get to support the Garden’s Community Garden, educational programs, cultural events, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and much more. I’m a member and here are my top ten reasons why:
  1. The Garden is a beautiful, peaceful, place to visit. I enjoy walking there.
  2. They care about our community. The Garden’s “Spaces of Opportunity” at 1200 W Vineyard Rd. in Phoenix is a good example of this. It enables all south Phoenix families to have affordable access to healthy food, active living and healthy roots for their cultures.
  3. Part of Spaces is the successful community garden that they and their community partners are building. It has a farmers market, community farming, and volunteer opportunities.
  4. They care about education and have classes for all ages on different topics taught by professionals.
  5. It’s an international destination of choice and when I travel I have automatic admission to 300 gardens.
  6. Gertrude’s Restaurant is there. I love the food, atmosphere and the legendary woman it’s named for.
  7. They have wonderful cultural events, jazz in the Garden and movie nights…And the butterfly exhibit and special installations like the Jun Kaneko sculptures.
  8. Here’s my wishlist for future visits: Ballet Eroica and the Devour Culinary Classic hosted by Phoenix Art Museum.
  9. We are having the Positively Powerful Woman Awards of May 17th at the Desert Botanical Garden. (Reduced membership, log in here and enter code PPW.)
  10. Here is the plus: The Desert Botanical Garden is guided by visionary leaders. Read about the men and women who are creating these reasons why the Garden is a treasure every person and family can enjoy. As a new member, you’ll soon be creating your own top ten+ reasons.

Every member benefits!

“Values are the morals that we live by. They reside deep within us, and they affect our emotions. They are tough to alter, and often reside in our unconsciousness” (Source: How To Be A Positively Powerful Person! The Spirit-Filled Edition. Dr. Joel Martin).

Values keep us healthy — emotionally, spiritually, and physically. They are the ones that we must unquestionably keep, and the ones that must direct our actions. Our values are our strengths. As a consultant, executive coach and facilitator, I’ve been called me ‘The Transformation Generator’ for a reason.  My unwavering promise is that I make sure the people I work for achieve their ULTIMATE goals in life and business. I value what they value and their missions as my own. The value that keeps me motivated is commitment.

So, I had an emotional response when I read that Essence magazine, a client of my ad agency years ago, is Black owned once again. The values Essence personified were acknowledgment, respect and commitment. They were committed to bringing equity and equality as “a marquee lifestyle brand for African American women.”

Congratulations to “@Essence Ventures LLC, a company launched in 2017 by Shea Moisture founder Richelieu Dennis. As a result, the Essence brand has returned to a 100% black-owned independent company, after 12 years of being owned by Time.….As part of the new deal, Essence President Michelle Ebanks will continue in her role and join its board of directors. In addition, Michelle Ebanks, along with a Black female-led executive team, will have an equity stake in the business….Said Ebanks in a statement. “In addition, it represents a critical recognition, centering and elevation of the Black women running the business from solely a leadership position to a co-ownership position.” Derek Dingle adds, “The “groundbreaking” transaction “demonstrates that a number of African American entrepreneurs can execute with vision and wherewithal to return valuable institutions to African American ownership – a rare event in contemporary Black business history.” @blackenterprise @Essence Read more here.

Declarations, a powerful opportunity to create change

Declarations, a powerful opportunity to create change

Declarations, a powerful opportunity to create change

Last year, just before the 2016 Positively Powerful Woman Awards Dinner, a group of us got together to discuss what was the one thing we wanted people who attended to leave with. We wanted people to be inspired, excited and knowing that they had a big role in the process of effecting change in the world. It was important that our guests believe that evening was the start of something and not a singular event. That when they went home that evening, they were ready to move the world forward in a Powerful and Positive way. What finally took hold for us was the thought of individual declarations.

2017 Positively Powerful Woman Awards and Dinner

June 10th at the Desert Botanical Gardens

Why declarations? Because they are often life altering. A declaration unlike a new year’s resolution, changes our relationship with others, our friends, family, and community. It impacts how we view the past and creates a future we were not aware of until just that moment. A true declaration has commitment attached to its hip. Our declarations matter to us.

And so we invited our guest to write a note to themselves, that evening, right there at the dinner, that would contain their own personal declaration about their future. Place the note in a self-addressed envelope and that we would mail the notes back to them on June 1st, 2017. No, we did not read the notes.

The Power of Declarations is that it is the point at which the world begins to changes.

HOSTS: KEN MORGAN & MARK ASHER “BUSINESS FOR BREAKFAST”

This morning I had the great opportunity to chat with Ken Morgan and Mark Asher, the congenial hosts of the Business For Breakfast radio program on Money Radio 1510. We talked about the upcoming 10th Annual Positively Powerful Woman Awards at the Desert Botanical Garden.

This is the 10th Anniversary and our intentions are the same but we’ve grown – stronger, more global, even more, committed to “Celebrating the accomplishments of women in ways that empower all people to live their dreams!” There can never be enough recognition bestowed upon the strong, honorable, and powerful women in our communities and beyond. Our Celebration Weekend’s June 10th Gala and June 9th Global Women’s World Cafe are the platforms for providing the praise, connections, and gratitude due to all women.

Listen in. This is an open invitation. The public is invited to join us for the 10th Annual Award Dinner Celebration this, June 10th at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens.
Here is our conversation. And here’s how to register.
