Isola jones

I received the historic “48 Women: Arizona’s Most Intriguing Women” as a gift and every one of the women was accomplished. I stopped when I read about Isola Jones, her photo was captivating and her accomplishments global in scope. Then I saw her interview with Linda White Wolf and heard her magnificent voice. I was delighted when she said “yes” to receiving the 2015 Positively Powerful Woman Award For Arts & Culture Leadership. She will be one of 6 honorees to be acknowledged during the June 5th Awards luncheon.

Good musicians and good leaders share a positive trait. They connect people from all backgrounds and cultures as messengers. The combination of music and leadership is found within Isola Jones.

Isola Jones is internationally recognized as an extraordinary mezzo-soprano. Making her professional debut in the Verdi Requiem with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Jones within two years made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Olga in Eugene Onegin. Since then she has sung more than 500 performances as a leading artist at “The Met”, paired with such international artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Leontyne Price, Joan Sutherland, and performing under the baton of Richard Bonynge and James Levine.

Her resume of leading roles is equally impressive including Giulietta in Les Contes D’Hoffman, Ulrica in Ballo in Maschera, Preziosilla in La Forza del Destino, Amneris in Aida, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Maddalena in Rigoletto, and Dalila in Samson and Dalila. But it is her portrayal of Carmen, her signature role, for which she is best known. She was honored to participate in the world premier of James DeMars’ “The Blessingway Songs” along with iconic Native American flutist, R. Carlos Nakai and to have collaborated with James DeMars on an opera written for her: “Guadalupe, Our Lady of the Roses”.

Many people would be fulfilled having accomplished all this. However this Positively Powerful Woman is also sharing her gift of music with students through her work as an adjunct faculty member at South Mountain Community College. Isola has earned her Masters and is now pursuing her DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from Arizona State University.

I have always loved and supported the arts. I have a family of artists. I am amazed by the beauty and transcendent quality of each artistic form. The dedication to honing the craft, the sacrifice and the fortitude it takes to succeed is a quality that every Positively Powerful Woman Award recipient possesses.
